Lake Erie 95% Ice Covered

With the almost constant cloud cover of the past few weeks we have not had many opportunities to get a nice look at the lake ice, but recently a NOAA satellite was able to grab a nice image of both lakes Erie and Ontario!   The shallower Lake Erie is now 95% covered in ice!   A month of below normal temperatures helped to ice things over quickly the last couple weeks of January.

There are still some small areas of open water around the north side of the lake and near the large crack inbetween Cleveland & Toledo.  The ice surface does have some large fractures and those are very evident in the image.

Amherst Town Board Votes Down Puppy Sale Ban

AMHERST NY - The Amherst Town Board voted Monday night against a proposal to make the sale of puppies in pet stores illegal on recommendation by the town attorney because he feels this proposed law is more of a state issue.

The proposal was originally submitted by Amherst Town Board member Mark Manna.

Members of Western New York Citizens against puppy mills have sided with Manna. "We are trying to set a precedent for other areas," said Deb Gick, a member of WNY Citizens against Puppy Mills. "If Amherst starts, who is to say Cheektowaga isn't going to set a law? Or Lockport?"

Blame has been pointed at Amherst's local pet store Steve's Wonderful Wold of Pets for possibly getting their dogs from puppy mills.

Owner Steve Lane has denied this before. "No, we absolutely never buy dogs from puppy mills," said Lane. "We buy from quality, approved, professional breeders that have been screened out to ensure we don't get puppy mill dogs."
