Construction Comes to Niagara Falls Blvd.

TOWN OF AMHERST, N.Y. (WGRZ) -- One of the busiest stretches of roadway in all of Western New York is getting a much-needed facelift.

Construction began July 21 at the intersection of Niagara Falls Boulevard and Ridge Lea/Koenig Roads. That's just south of Interstate 290.

Workers will add a lane and a traffic signal at the exit of the 290 eastbound toward Niagara Falls Boulevard southbound. That will allow drivers to more easily cross traffic to get into the left turn lanes for Ridge Lea Road, where a second turn lane will be added. Finally, extra turn lanes will be provided for drivers turning left from Ridge Lea and Koenig Roads as they enter Niagara Falls Boulevard.

There are also improvements for pedestrians, including wider sidewalks and shoulders.

The $4 million project was delayed due to the budget battle in Albany. It is paid for using state and federal dollars.

State Department of Transportation Acting Commissioner Stanley Gee and local leaders broke ground on the project and construction began soon after. It's expected to wrap up before the end of the year.
