Eerie Goings On at Torn Space: "Fall of the House of Usher" (Catch it While You Can)!

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Like an extended Edward Gorey illustration come to life, Torn Space's production of "The Fall of the House of Usher," written by Steven Berkoff, based on the Edgar Allen Poe story, is relentless in its macabre creepiness--though it does throw in a light touch.

As directed by Irish Classical Theatre Company's artistic director Vincent O'Neill, the play, at 70 minutes long, offers an intense portrait of the Usher siblings, Roderick (David Oliver) and Madeline (Cassie Gorniewicz), as they molder in their ancient crumbling home. They are the last of their family line, and it's not giving away to much to say that it's not looking too good for the name to carry on. O'Neill, who studied in his youth with master mime Marcel Marceau, evokes his training in his staging and direction--the agile cast, which also includes Andrew Kottler, is physically able to bring the audience along for the ride.

The set, and Berkoff's adaptation, feautre the spooky ancestral home as a fourth character in the play; speaking to the walls, and about the legacy there, the audience doesn't need much convincing to know that something's not right in the House of Usher.

The show closes on March 6--if you haven't been to a Torn Space production, this would be a good starter. You'll be right at home--indulging that taste for the slightly creepy with this definitely haunting atmospheric melodrama. And don't be afraid to laugh...if you don't, you might scream....
