BUFFALO, N.Y.– Joan Synder Kuhl, workplace talent consultant and millennial expert, is the latest speaker to sign on for Accelerate Upstate 2.0, the economic development summit being hosted by the Buffalo Niagara Partnership on January 29 in Buffalo.  M&T Bank serves as the title sponsor for Accelerate Upstate 2.0, while Mrs. Kuhl’s address is sponsored by Bryant & Stratton College, Performance Management Partners, and Spicer Group.

“Accelerate Upstate 2.0 is all about realistic opportunities for sustained economic growth in Upstate New York,” said Andrew J. Rudnick, President & CEO of the Buffalo Niagara Partnership.  “Joan Synder Kuhl, as the event’s opening speaker will challenge Upstate employers and economic development leaders to refine their workforce development tactics to be leading edge.”

Kuhl is founder of Why Millennials Matter, a Generation-Y speaking and consulting company based in New York City. Why Millennials Matter is focused on raising awareness to employers about the value of investing in their future workforce. Organizations often struggle to attract and retain millennials (Gen-Y) because they lack the insights into the motivations of Gen-Y workers and the benefits that will inspire their loyalty.

In addition to Kuhl’s presentation, Accelerate Upstate 2.0 will also feature James McConeghy, chief financial officer for Chobani, Inc. and renowned pollster John Zogby, creator of the Zogby Poll.

The Accelerate Upstate 2.0 program will also feature two expert panel sessions:

·         Accelerate Upstate Meets the Regional Councils will focus on Governor Andrew Cuomo’s regional approach to economic development, which, for the first time, establishes Upstate New York as eight separate regions and looks for each area to develop a locally-vetted growth plan via a Regional Economic Development Council (REDC).  Panelists include John Batiste, President & CEO of Klein Steel; and E.J. McMahon, Senior Fellow at the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research.

·         One Day’s Trip: How can Upstate take advantage of its enviable market location? will examine competitive advantages for Upstate including freshwater, its border location, and proximity to major economic centers including Montreal, Toronto, and New York City.  Panelists include Steve Hyde, President & CEO of Genesee County Economic Development Corporation; Thomas Moebus, Deputy Director of the Levin Institute; and Danièle Ayotte, Deputy Consul General of Canada in New York.

Accelerate Upstate 2.0 follows the original Accelerate Upstate in August, 2011, positioned at the time as a starting point for New York’s Regional Economic Development Councils, which kicked off immediately afterwards. The Accelerate Upstate agenda was delivered following the conference to regional, state and federal leaders, and many of its recommendations were included in the various Councils’ five-year plans.

Accelerate Upstate 2.0 will be webcast across New York State online in real time.  Stakeholders from across New York State are encouraged to watch online and participate via the Partnership’s facebook and twitter accounts using hashtag #Accelerate.
