Amherst Senior Center Brings Joy to 65 Area Seniors

The Amherst Center for Senior Services once again partnered with Home Instead Senior Care of Williamsville to coordinate the Be a Santa to a Senior® program which helps provide presents to seniors who otherwise might not receive a gift this holiday season.

The Amherst Center for Senior Services provided the names of 65 seniors in need and those wish items were placed on tags on the lobby Christmas tree at The Amherst Senior Center. Members, staff and the public took the tags and purchased gifts. Amherst Senior Center staff wrapped all the gifts while Senior Outreach Services, Social Work and Amherst Meals on Wheels staff personally delivered the gifts before Christmas.

Home Instead Senior Care, a non-medical home care company assisting seniors in their home, has spearheaded and coordinated the program for 12 years and has given out more than 1200 gifts in that time to area seniors. The area office has teamed up with Rich Products, Catholic Charities, Buffalo Meals On Wheels, Schofield Adult Day Care and Absolut of Orchard Park to provide gifts.

Thank you cards have been received and here are some of the kind words expressed by the recipients:
-“Christmas was too much, all the wonderful things you gave me.”
-“I was so moved by the thought behind putting the gift bag together. As I went through the items in the bag I knew you all know what I love most. The yarn will make at least two small lap robes for handicap children. Thank you very much.”
-“I want to thank you so much for the lovely gifts, especially the coloring books and pencils which I will put to good use during the cold weather. It is so nice having friends like you.”

The Amherst Senior Center provides a supportive environment for every dimension of wellness: physical, emotional, social, intellectual and vocational. We also encourage a new vision of aging in our community. Open to anyone 55 years of age or older. For information, visit www.amherst.ny.us and click on the Senior Services Department.
