Dog Ears Bookstore Adds Delicious Twist to Annual Gala

The ninth annual Dog Ears Bookstore Gala will take place from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, April 22, at the Buffalo Irish Center, 245 Abbott Road, South Buffalo. This year’s theme is “Buffalo’s Small Plate Debate,” and approximately 25 amazing local restaurants will be on hand to compete for the title of “Best Appetizers in Western New York!”

Providing musical entertainment will be the Charlie O’Neill Unplugged Club, the Grace Stumberg Band and Jay McDonnell. Beer and wine will be included in the ticket price, including a special beer-tasting event by Certo Brothers Distributing. Judging the Small Plate Debate will be South District Councilman Christopher Scanlon, WGRZ-TV personalities Kevin O’Neill and Maryalice Demler, and Buffalo Bills great Steve Tasker.

Community Groups to Host Informational Tables at Elmwood Village Farmers Market

The popular Elmwood Village Farmers Market returns to the corner of Elmwood Avenue and Bidwell Parkway in Buffalo’s historic Elmwood Village on Saturday, May 13, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The outdoor market will take place every Saturday, rain or shine, through Nov. 25.

Each week, three different community groups will host an informational table at the market. The following groups are on the schedule for the 2017 season: 

May 13: West Side Community Services, United Healthcare, The Friends of the City of Buffalo Animal Shelter

May 20: Allentown Industries, Big Big Table Community Cafe, Lexington Co-op

May 27: D'Youville College School of Pharmacy, Massage & Mindful Health By Erin, The Friends of the City of Buffalo Animal Shelter

SUNY Fredonia and AT&T Stem Exploration Program’s Student Expo

More than 30 high school students from Chautauqua County celebrated the completion of the Fredonia and AT&T STEM Exploration Program with an expo and demo event where they demonstrated some of their STEM projects, including virtual reality, mathematical posters, sealed seeded petri dishes with bacteria, gliders and Theremins, an electrical musical instrument that they learned to assemble, and other projects. The students that participated in the inaugural three week program also received recognition certificates from representatives from Rep. Tom Reed’s, New York State Senator Catharine Young’s and New York State Assemblyman Andy Goodell’s offices.

Former Buffalo Bill Ray Bentley Coming to Walden Galleria this Saturday

Author and former Buffalo Bills linebacker Ray Bentley will be signing autographs at the Walden Galleria from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 25. Bentley will be stationed on the first floor near Sears and the Apple Store and is teaming up with BB&G Charities to help raise money to support Western New York’s underprivileged youth. Bentley recently joined BB&G as a spokesperson.

Bentley’s books will be available for purchase and all autographs are free. However, he will be collecting donations for BB&G and donating a portion of all sales to the charity. Bentley is the author of a football novel based in Buffalo titled Driftwood, as well as the Darby the Dinosaur and Bubba Gator children’s books series. These books along with other memorabilia will be available at the signing. BB&G will also be selling candy bars as part of the fundraiser.

Cardinal O’Hara High School to Host Annual Catholic Men’s Conference

The 15th annual Catholic Men’s Conference will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at Cardinal O’Hara High School, 39 O’Hara Road, Tonawanda.

Titled “Courage to Believe,” the goal of the conference is to help men grow in faith. Speakers for the conference will include Robert Rogers, who experienced a family tragedy of biblical proportions when he lost his family in a flash flood; Simon Peter, Jesus’ right hand man as portrayed by actor Mark Price; and Deacon Mike Ficorilli, president-elect of the Catholic Men’s Fellowship.

Western New Yorkers asked to nominate outstanding educators in their community

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — For the 9th consecutive year, the Buffalo Bills and M&T Bank are calling on fans to nominate Western New York’s “Hall of Fame-caliber” educators for the 2017 M&T Bank Touchdown for Teachers program, which recognizes local teachers for extraordinary service to their schools and communities.

This year, the Bills and M&T are hoping to gather the most nominations in the program’s history. To make it happen, they’re challenging each of the schools throughout the 15-county region that is eligible for the competition to nominate at least one of their outstanding teachers.

The Elmwood Village Farmers Market will hold its seventh annual poster contest to promote the outdoor market’s upcoming 2017 season. Entries for the poster competition are due by 5 p.m. Friday, March 10. Whether you’re a student studying the arts, a professional graphic designer or just someone with a creative streak, you’re invited to submit your design for an 11x17-inch color poster that accurately reflects the feel of the Elmwood Village Farmers Market, sponsored by the Elmwood Village Association.
