Increased Penalty for Cell Phone Use While Driving

AMHERST, N.Y. - Deputy Supervisor Guy Marlette issued a notice today to Amherst residents that beginning February 16, 2011, if you are issued a summons for cell phone use while driving, it is no longer just a fine.  A new law, passed in December 2010, now carries an addition of two points on your New York State license if you are convicted of cell phone use while driving in NYS.  Cell phone violations have serious public safety consequences for all drivers.

“Distracted driving results in thousands of accidents a year, some of them fatal, states Marlette who is the liaison to Amherst Traffic Safety Board.  A hands free device is the only legal way to use your cell phone behind the wheel.  I encourage any Amherst resident to make sure they have the proper equipment if they intend to use their cell phone while driving”, the Deputy Supervisor concluded.
