Public Hearing Planned for Westwood Country Club Proposal

AMHERST, N.Y. -- The public will have a chance to weigh-in on a proposed mixed-use development at the former Westwood Country Club in Amherst. The town board approved the draft environmental impact statement Monday night at a special meeting which clears the way for public hearings to take place.

This comes a year-and-a-half after a re-zoning application was turned in by Mensch Capital Partners for the site.

Monday, some people voiced concerns about traffic if the development ultimately gets approved.

But one town councilman saw no reason to hold off on public hearings.

"No other developer has been made to submit four draft environmental impact statements, so we're holding this to a high level of scrutiny. We have to accept it. We are duty bound by law to accept it because we found no deficiencies," said Councilman Mark Manna.

The dates for the public hearings have not yet been set.

Also in Amherst, the town board voted to re-zone land where a new car-max dealership will be built. A Holiday Inn currently sits on the land on Niagara Falls Boulevard right by the 290. Carmax is one of the nation's most popular car re-sellers.
