Neighbors Protest Planned Hotel in Amherst | News
AMHERST, N.Y. -- There was a heated meeting in the Town of Amherst Tuesday night over a proposed new hotel.
More than 100 people, all dressed in red, showed up to the meeting to try to convince the Zoning Board of Appeals not to approve variances for the project.
The 6-story tall, 137-room Hyatt Place Hotel would sit just behind the Lord Amherst Hotel in Snyder right by where Main Street meets Interstate 290.
Iskalo Development is asking for nine area variances to the zoning ordinances. Residents say the requests show the developer is trying to build too large a hotel in too small a space.
One of the variances would allow Iskalo to install an architectural feature to the top of the proposed hotel that would increase its total height to 77 feet. The ordinance only allows 65 feet in height on that property.
Iskalo says it would simply be architectural and would only impact the eastern portion of the building that faces Interstate 290. Residents on the western side just across a pond argue otherwise.
Iskalo is also asking for variances regarding parking space sizes, landscaping, sound barriers, and signage.
The zoning board of appeals will make its decision on the nine total variances next month.
If the project gets full approval, Iskalo hopes to start construction this spring, with the new hotel opening next summer.
