First Annual Winter Carnival at the Historical Society: Indoor and Outdoor Activities for ALL AGES!

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society's all-age, indoor/outdoor Winter Carnival will take place Sunday, January 23, 2011, from 1 to 4 p.m. This event is made possible with generous support from the Northwest Buffalo Community Center.

Special guest Sabretooth, the Buffalo Sabres' beloved mascot, will be here to greet visitors and pose for photos.

Outdoor activities include snowshoeing with Tifft Nature Preserve instructors, Iroquois Snowsnake game demonstrations, sledding, and snowman building.

Indoor activities will include face painting, arts & crafts, mini-museum tours and artifact scavenger hunts. In addition, everyone can enjoy live music from Vitamin D, a young local band that plays family-friendly reggae, funk and soul music. Indulge in delicious, locally made baked goods from Chrusciki Bakery, and free hot chocolate! Also the Museum’s model trains will be running all afternoon.

When former Slippery Rock University wrestler and West Seneca West Middle School teacher and coach Marty Rudich was told by the medical profession to cut back on his activities and increase his medications, he wisely chose to explore another alternative.

Marty contacted Steven Helmicki, president of Primordial Strength Inc. of East Aurora, and is now working with Helmicki and Primordial to regain his strength and return to a more active and athletic lifestyle.

Primordial Strength Inc., an exercise training company based in East Aurora, integrates Systema breathing methodologies into its programs to enhance the health and well being of all its clients. The practice involves breath patterns that control heart rate, respiration and inhibition of the release of stress chemicals. 

A Russian martial art, Systema aids in performance, stress reduction, restoration and awareness. Proper integration also allows further advancement of Explosive Power Endurance throughout Coach Steven Helmicki’s training system. Helmicki, president of Primordial Strength, is fortunate to have train with acclaimed Russian martial arts instructor Vladimir Vasiliev in the practice of Systema.<

Every Friday at 10am in January and February, Buffalo Tours will offer free downtown walking tours when the temperature is 25 degrees or below.  For each degree above 25 the cost goes up $1 to a maximum of $10 per adult ($5 for students). Price is determined 15 minutes before the tour using the Weather Channel website for the 14203 zip code.  Tours meet in the Buffalo Visitor Center at 617 Main Street.

Lockport YMCA to Host Annual SUNY Coaching Certification

Lockport, N.Y. – The Lockport YMCA is hosting a SUNY Youth Sports Institute Coaching Certification Course on Wednesday, January 19th.  The upcoming course will be the second SUNY Coaching Certification held with the Lockport YMCA since January 2010.   

The class is scheduled to begin at 6:30pm at the Lockport YMCA on East Avenue, and will last approximately 3 hours.  The course is open to all who are interested within the Lockport community.  John Strong will be the SUNY Youth Sports Institute Instructor teaching the Wednesday evening course.

Local Basketball Player Goes From Redshirt to Major Contributor at Michigan

Hamburg resident Blake McLimans was redshirted at Michigan last season so he could learn more about what it takes to succeed at the Division I level. This year, it’s a different story.

McLimans, a 6-foot 10-inch, 240-pound forward who wears number 22 for the Michigan Wolverines, spent his off-season training at Primordial Strength Inc. in East Aurora with Steven Helmicki, president of the local fitness training company. Today, McLimans is a big contributor to his 10-2 team, averaging 7.7 minutes, 1.9 points and 1.3 rebounds per game.
