The Super Bowl is America’s most watched national sporting event, and on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 1, there will be lots of game day socializing that may include drinking. That’s why The Resource Training Center of Amherst, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and local law enforcement officials are urging football fans to choose sides now: drinking OR driving. If you plan on drinking on Super Bowl Sunday, these organizations encourage you to designate a sober driver to get you home safely!

Sports Collectors Expo to Feature 17 Well-known Athletes

 

Seventeen stars from the NFL, NHL and Major League Baseball are scheduled to appear from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Sports Collectors Expo. The event is set to take place at Batavia Downs Gaming, located at 8315 Park Road, Batavia.

NFL greats scheduled to appear include former Buffalo Bills Marv Levy, Billy Shaw, Vince Ferragamo and Ken Jones. Other NFL greats including Don Maynard, Larry Brown, George Rogers, Jack Youngblood, Tom Mack and Rocky Bleier are also on the schedule. Levy, Shaw, Maynard, Youngblood and Mack are all members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Bases Loaded Sports Collectibles, in conjunction with Schwartz Sports and Memorabilia, will be participating in a private signing with Buffalo Sabres legend and Hockey Hall of Famer Dominek Hasek. Items must be ordered or dropped off at Bases Loaded, 794 French Road, Cheektowaga, no later than 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10. The signing will take place in Buffalo during the week of Jan. 11 and Items can be picked up after Jan. 14.

WNY Trainers to Learn About Inclusive Fitness in Daemen Program

A specialized education program for area fitness trainers and instructors on modifying exercise programs to make them more open and inclusive to individuals with disabilities will be offered as part of a newly established project at Daemen College.

The comprehensive “train the trainer” four-week program, which is free for fitness and exercise instructors, will be held from 2:30 to 5 p.m. on Jan. 13, 20 and 27 and Feb. 3 in Daemen’s Wick Campus Center. This first component of a two-phase project, “Get Movin’ – Exercise, Nutrition and Wellness: A Fitness Initiative for Individuals with Disabilities,” is being funded by a $50,000 Inclusive Fitness Field-Related Grant from the New York State Developmental Disabilities Council (DDPC). Daemen was one of only three organizations across the state to receive the grant.

Fans of the National Hockey League — and hockey in general — have an outstanding reason to pay a visit to nearby London, Ontario ... and that would be to experience the London Knights in action! 

The London Knights Hockey Club formed in 1965 as a Junior “A” franchise. They were known then as the London Nationals, an Ontario Hockey Association (OHL) affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs. This relationship ended in 1968 when the National Hockey League ended direct sponsorship of junior teams.

Primordial Strength Inc., a private gym in Elma, has announced that it is now offering SYSTEMA, a Russian method of martial arts. Primordial Strength’s owner Steven Helmicki is a SYSTEMA instructor who trained under Vladimir Vasiliev, Black Belt Magazine’s Instructor of the Year. Helmicki has instructed and taught SYSTEMA to the New York State Police Special Operations Response Team comprised of former Navy SEALs, Army Rangers and Marines.
